Xabi Alonso has revealed his relationship with Liverpool after being snubbed for the manager’s job

Xabi Alonso insists his relationship with Liverpool remains as strong as ever despite his decision to reject the Reds’ attempts to hire him as their next manager.

Alonso was the first target when Jurgen Klopp revealed his decision to retire this summer but, after fielding calls from Liverpool and Bayern Munich, he publicly reiterated his commitment to Bayer Leverkusen.

Liverpool have finally appointed Arne Slot as their new manager but Alonso remains on the radar for a future job, with the former player admitting he still has strong feelings for his old club.

“Of course, my bond with Liverpool is there and still is,” he said CNN. “So there’s no kind of problem with that.”

Alonso also admitted that he felt too attached to Bayer Leverkusen to jump ship at this point in their journey.

“All these decisions must be strengthened,” he said. “You really have to think about them. And it was more than what I had, not what I lacked.”

Alonso remains under contract in Germany until the summer of 2026 and remains on the radar of his last three clubs: Liverpool, Bayern and Real Madrid.

For now, though, Liverpool have put their faith in Slot. The Dutchman started work earlier this month and is joined at Anfield by assistant Sipke Hulshoff and playmaking coach Ruben Peeters, while reports suggest Slot hopes to add Etienne Reijnen, another assistant, to his backroom team.
