Real Madrid or Bayern Munich? Florian Wirtz pushed for preferential transfer

Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz has refused to say whether he would like to join Real Madrid or Bayern Munich in the future.

Wirtz has emerged as one of Europe’s hottest talents in recent years and played a key role in Leverkusen’s 2023/24 campaign which saw the club once known as ‘Neverkusen’ complete the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal double. The only game they lost all season was in the Europa League final.

The 21-year-old returned from an ACL injury 18 months ago and went on to score 38 goals from 49 in all competitions. He has high hopes for Germany’s hopes of winning Euro 2024 on home soil again this summer.

Leverkusen expects Wirtz to stay this summer, but a key decision may have to be made at the end of the 2024/25 season – when he will have two years left on his contract.

Madrid and Bayern are the two teams most linked with a move.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the start of Euro 2024, Wirtz was asked if he wanted to play with fellow German and Bayern star Jamal Musiala at club level.

“We both joke about this, it would be fun to play in the same team in a way. But we are both happy in our teams,” was the answer.

Pressed further to choose between Madrid and Bayern, Wirtz gave nothing: “Jamal is already playing for Bayern and I am free at Leverkusen.”

Manchester City have been tracking Wirtz since before his injury, and there was renewed interest when he returned to the field at the start of last year. Liverpool also paid close attention to the player, as did local giants Bayern Munich. 90 min He previously stated that choosing to stay in Germany could ultimately increase Bayern’s chances over foreign rivals.

But it has been claimed in Spain in recent days that Real Madrid have already reached an informal deal with Wirtz to join them in 2025.
