In the second season, the Melbourne Stars will have chosen one of the BBL overseas and their rivals Melbourne Renegades will follow in the second place.
The weighted lottery – divided between the four teams that missed out on the finals and those who made it – Sydney Sixers, who lost in last season’s finals, finished eighth while defending champions Brisbane Heat will pick six.
The Stars will be hoping for luck with their first pick, who is likely to be a platinum player, than last season when they visited England’s Harry Brook but withdrew from the tournament to manage his career.
Picks can be traded between clubs and that has already happened once when the Adelaide Strikers and Sydney Thunder swapped their second round picks as part of Wes Agar’s move to the Thunder.
The Stars will have picks in the first, second and fourth rounds that will go back to the third round meaning six will get 17.
The draft will also have four price bands: platinum (AU$420,000), gold (AU$300,000), silver (AU$200,000) and bronze (AU$100,000).
Clubs can sign up a total of four players with one of those available under a multi-year contract option brought in to try and secure key names ahead of rival T20 leagues. Sam Billings became the first player to agree to a deal under that after signing a three-year deal with the Thunder. If the fourth player is selected, he becomes the first player to fill the position overseas.
