Ricky Ponting confirms the role of Indian head coach

Ricky Ponting has revealed that he has been asked to be the next coach of India, but although he is very interested in the job, he said that it is something that he “can’t” do at the moment given the commitment that will be required.

Ponting said he had ambitions to become a national coach, but between his other roles – head coach at the Delhi Capitals and television work in Australia – the time was not right.

“I’ve seen a lot of reports about it,” Ponting said ICC review. “Usually these things appear on social media before you know it, but there were a few one-on-one conversations during the IPL, just to get a level of interest from me as to what I’m going to do.

“I would like to be the head coach of the national team, but with other things that I have in my life and wanting to have less time at home… it cannot be involved with the IPL team, so it will take that out of it as well.

“Also, the national coach is a 10 or 11 month annual job, and as much as I would like to do it, it doesn’t fit into my life right now and the things I enjoy doing. .”

Gautam Gambhir has been heard by the BCCI for this job and other names linked with it include Stephen Fleming and Justin Langer.

However, Ponting appeared to be closing the door slightly with his younger son Fletcher giving a positive response to the prospect of taking the job.

“My family and my children have spent the last five weeks with me at the IPL and they come every year and I had a whisper to my son about it, I said, ‘Dad has been given the job of coaching the Indians’ and he said, ‘Okay dad, we would like to move there for the next few years’,” he said. “They really like being here and the culture of cricket in India, but at the moment it probably doesn’t quite fit into my lifestyle.”

Ponting’s other roles include head of strategy at the Hobart Hurricanes and head coach of the Washington Freedom in the MLC who signed a two-year deal for the tournament that will directly follow the T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies. He has worked with Australia’s T20I and ODI teams.

The BCCI said the role of head coach will be for all three formats for three and a half years from July 2024 to December 2027.

Dravid began his two-year tenure after the 2021 T20 World Cup. His tenure was supposed to end after the 2023 ODI World Cup in November last year, but he agreed to an extension until the end of the upcoming T20 World Cup.
