Match Report – ENG-W vs PAK-W 1st ODI, May 23, 2024

Pakistan win toss, bowl vs In England

Pakistan won the toss and elected to bowl first in the opening ODI against England in Derby.

While the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh in October is on the minds of many teams, England captain Heather Knight hinted at a 50-over World Cup in India next year during a pre-match press conference on Wednesday. Pakistan, on the other hand, are looking for their first win against England in ODIs and crucial points to qualify for that world cup.

England swept the T20 series against Pakistan 3-0 with a victory in Leeds on Sunday, largely behind Danni Wyatt’s 48-ball 87. Maia Bouchier will join Beaumont up top, but Wyatt woke up not feeling well this morning so she won’t be taking part in the match.

Knight said at the time of the toss that it was difficult to leave out any of England’s three in-form spinners, so left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone, leg-spinner Sarah Glenn and off-spinner Charlie Dean they will all play. Kate Cross also comes into the one-day side and will carry most of the seam-bowling burden with all-rounder Nat Sciver-Brunt playing only as a batsman as he continues to manage a knee problem.

Pakistan have struggled for batting depth during the T20Is despite a better performance at Headingley where Nida Dar, their captain, said her side would look to build on the three ODIs that will end their tour of England.

“We will take a lot of positives from the T20s and take the momentum from that last game,” he said at the toss. “It’s also very important for us to qualify.”

Play was set to kick off in cool, blustery and breezy conditions with no rain in the forecast after a mild start to the week across much of England.
