Maya Le Tissier gave England a chance as Niamh Charles withdrew from the squad
Maya Le Tissier has been placed on the waiting list ahead of England’s Euro 2025 double header against France.
Sarina Wiegman named her 26-man squad ahead of the summer games earlier this month with United’s Le Tissier initially named, along with Southampton goalkeeper Kayla Rendell, Liverpool’s Missy Bo Kearns and Tottenham’s Jess Naz.
However, injuries have led to changes with Chelsea’s Niamh Charles recently withdrawing from the squad due to a calf injury.
This comes after Arsenal’s Lotte Wubben-Moy was ruled out of the game against France due to a foot injury, and is expected to return before the July games against the Republic of Ireland and Sweden.
Elsewhere, Birmingham City goalkeeper Lucy Thomas has replaced Southampton’s Rendell on the waiting list as the goalkeeper is treated for an ankle injury. Rendell received his first England call-up in April when he replaced the injured Khiara Keating, but is yet to get his first cap.
The Lionesses will play France at St James’ Park on Friday 31 May before the return leg at Saint-Etienne a few days later. In July, Wiegman’s men will face the Republic of Ireland at Carrow Road on July 12 before the Sweden game on July 16.
The new UEFA Women’s Euro qualifying system is similar to that of the Nations League and sees England in a tough group in League A, with only the top two qualifying for next year’s tournament in Switzerland.
If England finish third or fourth in their group, they will have to go through two rounds of play-offs against League B and C teams to qualify.
