Australia A vs India A to provide lead in Border-Gavaskar test series

The two-match Australia A vs India four-day series will precede the Border-Gavaskar Trophy later this year as a warm-up for the visitors and an opportunity for players from both sides to press Test selection bids.

The two matches will be held at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay from October 31 to November 3 followed by the MCG from November 7 to 10.

The entire India squad – which includes the main tour party and the A team – will then have an indoor warm-up match at the WACA between November 15 and 17 before the first Test at the Optus Stadium in Perth starting on November 22.

From Australia’s point of view, the two A matches will overtake the ODIs and the T20Is against Pakistan so the selectors may need to decide if there are any players involved in the white ball teams who could play for the A team. They will also clash in the Sheffield Shield games.

The T20Is against Pakistan are unlikely to feature Australia’s Test players if they are close to the India series.

Although indications were that Steven Smith would remain as the opener, Australia’s batting formation could still be up for debate ahead of the India series. The A games could be an opportunity for the likes of Cameron Bancroft, Marcus Harris and Matt Renshaw to prove themselves.

Last season Pakistan faced the Prime Minister’s XI, then the Australia A team, in Canberra ahead of the Test series.

On their previous tour of Australia in 2020-21, there were two warm-up matches against Australia A before the Test series. India won that series 2-1.

The Indian women’s team will also tour Australia for three ODIs in early December before the men’s second Test in Adelaide.
