‘Barca is the club of my life’

Xavi has expressed his desire to return to Barcelona in the future, despite receiving his marching orders on Friday.

The Spanish La Blaugrana coach’s term has come to an end a month after it was announced that he would remain in the position, having previously intended to step down at the end of the season.

Hansi Flick is expected to take over at Camp Nou next, with Sunday’s league game against Sevilla officially Xavi’s last game in charge.

Speaking ahead of his last game as Barca manager, Xavi was asked about his future in management.

Asked if he would like to come back to coach the team, Xavi said: “Yes, I would like to come back, why?

“Barcelona is the club of my life. I enjoyed this experience and suffered, of course. But I love being at this club and working for it. It was hard last week, but I have a clear conscience. I am proud and happy.

“When we got here we knew it was a difficult time for the team and I think we can be proud of the work we have done.

“I thank the president and I didn’t have a problem with the leaders, I am a member of the club and I have adapted to the situation. The president gave me his reasons, I can’t do anything but accept his decision.

“I’m not closing the door when I come back – I’m a coach, I’m a coach and it’s possible. I didn’t think about this goodbye, but I can’t do anything but respect you.”

Xavi replaced Ronald Koeman as Barca manager on 6 November 2021. His contract was due to expire in 2025. The 44-year-old won the La Liga title with Barca last season and the Spanish Super Cup.
