Bayern Munich ‘saved the best for last’ by signing Vincent Kompany

Max Eberl says that in appointing Vincent Kompany after a long managerial search, Bayern Munich ‘saved the best for last.’

Bayern announced in February that Thomas Tuchel will leave the club at the end of the season, just 14 months after replacing Julian Nagelsmann at the Allianz Arena.

Kompany becomes the eighth man to hold the top job at Bayern since former manager Pep Guardiola left the club in June 2016 to take over at Man City, although it has been reported that up to eight other coaches have considered the role ahead of him.

Xabi Alonso chose to stay at Leverkusen while German manager Nagelsmann and Hansi Flick, another former Bayern coach, rejected the chance to return.

Zinedine Zidane, Ralf Rangnick and Tuchel could not be tempted to take over next season while their reported interest in Man United Erik ten Haag and Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi fizzled out.

Bayern’s sporting board member Eberl told a press conference to introduce the new coach that the 38-year-old Belgian is ‘one of the most interesting coaches in Europe.’

“I’m very happy that it worked well with Vincent,” he said. “We found one of the most interesting coaches in Europe.

“He is a very young coach. We think quickly about the game, about the next steps. We look forward to new energy, new inspiration and new achievements.”

It’s been less than four years since Kompany hung up his boots and took charge of Anderlecht, switching to Burnley in the Championship two years later.

Eberl said: “Vincent’s two years at Anderlecht were fantastic, he coached the youngest team in Europe.

“Then he decided to move to England. They were promoted to the Premier League with a record 101 points and impressive football. That is why he has been on (our) list for a long time.

“According to experience, we are now walking with him on the road. We had a long decision-making process when looking for a coach and I can say – ‘save the best for last.’

Kompany’s football philosophy is similar to Bayern’s, Eberl said, adding: “Vincent has everything but the experience of working in a senior team so far.”

“He has a great personality and his style of play suits FC Bayern perfectly: we want to dominate, we want to have the ball. He also stands for that.

“We are happy to have this coach and to take the next steps with him.”

Eberl said Bayern wanted to close the door on eight coaches in eight years, adding: “We have had a high number of coaches recently – we want to change that, the coach is the most important person in the club.

“We have a great opportunity to row a few things and be a team again.

“We have a young coach (with) a strong character, which impressed us. We want to stand together as one. We will go through the same challenges again and we want to work together for a long time.”
