Ewen Ferguson claimed his third DP World Tour title and a place in The Open as a closing 68 gave him two wins at the BMW International Open in Germany.
The Scot went into the final day at Golfclub München Eichenried in a share of the lead with Jordan Smith and the pair were locked in a thrilling battle on Sunday.
A two-shot swing at the 14th proved a turning point, however, and Ferguson held his own to 18 under and broke down in tears as the closing stretch ensured he lifted the trophy.
Ferguson, who celebrated his 28th birthday on Saturday, produced a superb display of front-running on a wet final day in Munich, with three birdies and one dropped shot on the back nine to give him the edge over Smith as they changed. .
The 2021 European Challenge Tour qualifier didn’t blink, with back-to-back birdies on the 13th and 14th opening a three-stroke lead over Smith, who holed out on the 14th, giving Ferguson the luxury of winning. on the way home as he joins countrymen Sandy Lyle and Colin Montgomerie as Scottish winners of the BMW International Open.
The victory also earned him a place at Royal Troon in the Race to Dubai rankings, and he won and re-entered the world’s top 100.
Jesper Svensson, Laurie Canter, Nacho Elvira and Matteo Manassero also booked their places at The Open as part of the Race to Dubai’s undisclosed top five, while Guido Migliozzi confirmed his status as a European Swing winner.
Smith fired a 70 to finish tied for second at 16 under with Australia’s David Micheluzzi, who posted a 68 thanks to a stunning closing eagle, two clear of England’s Matthew Southgate and Scot Connor Syme. Belgian Matthis Besard, Sweden’s Jens Dantorp and Japan’s Rikuya Hoshino were 13 under tied for sixth place.
