Golf Business News – Millennials continue to increase golf participation in the US

The National Golf Foundation’s latest study on golfing trends in the US shows that interest in the sport continues to grow at record levels, with 2024 set to be the fifth year in a row that more than 500 million rounds of golf will be played across the country. 50 states.

The NGF has projected that 26.6 million golfers will play on a course by 2023 and an additional 18.4 million will play on a simulated course or at an entertainment venue such as Topgolf.

Golfers in the 18-34 age group are now the largest group of players on the course, at an estimated 6.3 million.

These rising figures are largely attributed to the way younger players are using golf in new ways such as social media, new clothing styles, YouTubers and other content creators are encouraging a new wave of golfers.

Topgolf and other simulation venues have also driven younger players to the course in record numbers. By 2023, 5.4 million people in the 18 to 34 age group participated in off-course golf activities alone.

The NGF also reports that a record 3.4 million people played a golf course for the first time by 2023. Among young people who do not play golf, seven million are ‘very interested’ in taking up the sport.

Women’s interest in the sport is also growing. By 2023, 26% of golfers in the category will be women. An estimated 7 million women and girls played golf by 2023, the highest participation rate since 2006.

Accessibility to golf courses is also a major factor in driving participation among 18-34 year olds. The NGF reports that 75% of US golf courses are public, which is an important factor for young golfers as they are more likely to play public courses than private clubs.
