India head coach – BCCI invites applications, tenure to run till end of 2027

BCCI has invited applications* for the successor a Rahul Dravid as head coach of India’s senior men’s national team. Applications must be “submitted by 6pm IST on May 27, 2024,” the BCCI said in a statement on Monday. That is the day after the final of IPL 2024. The new coach will be appointed for a period of three and a half years, from July 1, 2024 to December 31, 2027.

Last year the BCCI made a mistake by inviting applications for the post of head coach after the coach’s post was over. As there was not enough time for the next big job, the outgoing coach, Dravid, was confident that he would be extended till the T20 World Cup in June.

This time, applications were invited even before the team went to the T20 World Cup. In case Dravid wants to continue, he will have to reapply. The rest of the backroom staff will be appointed in consultation with the new coach. Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, recently said that India is unlikely to split the coaching role based on formats.

“We are looking for a long-term coach for three years,” Shah said last week. “There is no example of different coaches for different types of Indian cricket. Besides, we have many players who have played well. Ultimately, it will be the call of the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC). I have to do what they decide.”

The CAC will also decide on the new national selector that the BCCI had already announced in January this year. This selector is likely to replace Salil Ankola, who is the second member of the selection committee from the western region. The new member may come from the northern area. “Several discussions for the selector’s position have already taken place,” Shah said. “The CAC will meet in about a week to finalize the name, and we will announce it soon.”

Players of the teams have been released from IPL 2024 to leave early

Shah also confirmed that the Indian team will go to the T20 World Cup in USA and West Indies in two groups. Those players whose teams do not qualify for the IPL will leave on May 24 with the coaching staff. The rest of the players will leave after the IPL final on May 26. India’s first match is on June 5, when they will face Ireland.

Shah dismissed the rested players whose teams have no chance of entering the playoffs in the remaining games of the league stage. He said that IPL is a good opportunity for them to sharpen T20. “Look how well Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma played the other day,” Shah said. “If [Jasprit] Bumrah gets to throw to Head, what better opportunity is there to practice?”

Mayank Yadav to get a fast bowling contract

Lucknow Super Giants fast bowler Mayank Yadav, who is prone to injury and is likely to be ruled out of IPL 2024, will be under the supervision of the BCCI after Shah confirmed that he has been awarded a newly minted fast bowler contract. He joins other promising fast bowlers without an all-rounder: Akash Deep, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Umran Malik, Yash Dayal and Vidwath Kaverappa. These bowlers will be monitored by NCA medical staff throughout the year except during the IPL.

WTC final to come out of England?

While acknowledging the challenge of finding another window for it or finding another venue to host it in June, Shah revealed that the BCCI has spoken to the ICC about new venues for the World Test Championship (WTC) final. The first two finals were played in England where India lost. The third WTC final will also be played in England in June 2025. “We have discussed it with the ICC,” said Shah, “They will consider changing the venue.”
