Inside the victory of Xander Schauffele | Seen and Heard on the 7th Day of Valhalla

Sunday at the PGA Championship turned into a three-man horse race, with Bryson DeChambeau and Viktor Hovland battling to overtake Xander Schauffele.

As the leaders begin their rounds, the players who have become the heroes of the tournament begin to fill in as they finish their rounds. Rory McIlroy carded a 67 to finish T12. Scottie Scheffler capped his surreal week with a 66 to finish T8.

“Probably the weirdest week of his golf career, definitely,” GOLF’s Dylan Dethier said of Scheffler. “He came in as a big favorite. He is still facing criminal charges.”

As the afternoon wore on, the focus turned to the contestants.

Both Dethier and GOLF’s Sean Zak were bullish on Schauffele’s ability to close out his first major tournament, and Schauffele really came up big, posting clutch birdies on 11 and 12 to put his chasers away, and close out the day with a double. -6 18 to get the win.

“He played like a player who deserved to play well this week,” said Zak.

“There was a lot of chaos this week,” Dethier added. “I think in the end, we found the right guy. That’s all you can ask for.”
