IPL 2025 – CSK proposes rule change to keep MS Dhoni uncapped
If the IPL sets a similar fee for non-capped players and retained players ahead of the 2025 auction, it is believed that CSK is keen to retain Dhoni through that route. Several other franchises, however, were not in favor of giving long-retired internationals prohibited status.
Sunrisers Hyderabad owner Kavya Maran is understood to have said that allowing the retired player to be retained as an uncapped player would be “disrespectful” to the individual and his value, which could be high in the auction. He said it would set a “wrong precedent” if a non-capped player in the auction earns more than a former international who is retained as a non-capped player. His suggestion was for the retired player to be part of the auction, where the market would determine the fair value.
The head of another team in Wednesday’s meeting said that several teams apart from CSK are of the opinion that a player who has played in other countries should not be considered in the uncapped category regardless of how many years he has retired.
Retired Indian players may be allowed to reduce the base price
The franchises unanimously agreed that Indian players who had not played international cricket for five years should be allowed to reduce their price in the auction. The proposal is understood to have come from IPL CEO Hemang Amin, whose view was that the lower price would give such players a greater chance of being bought at the auction.
The franchise official said that the Indian capped players who had not played international matches for many years were forced to enter the auction at a low price, so they were not sold despite their names being bid more than once.
