Ivan Toney may consider free agency in 2025 if the right club doesn’t present itself this summer.
The 28-year-old, who was named in England’s 33-man Euro 2024 starting squad on Tuesday, has 12 months left on his current deal and is ready to leave the club to continue his career.
Toney was once valued at £100m by Brentford manager Thomas Frank, and the Dane said in February that his prized asset ‘could be sold in the summer’, but with little time left on his contract, Brentford will consider offers in excess of £45m.
Arsenal and Chelsea are long-term players who have discussed Toney, but he has never been high on the club’s wish list, while 90 min revealed in April that Manchester United are interested in signing Toney as they look to add experience and leadership to their squad.
All three clubs are looking for other top strikers, with Victor Osimhen, Benjamin Sesko, Viktor Gyokeres among those linked; and with Toney seeking wages in the region of £250,000-a-week, it remains to be seen whether he will be offered.
90 min understands that Toney is willing to stay and leave as a free agent. He feels loyal to Brentford, having returned in January after an eight-month ban for breaking betting rules, but he can only agree to a new deal if his wage demands are met, and this is difficult for Brentford to agree to.
Had this been the case, Toney could have played out the season at the Gtech Community Stadium alongside club-record £30m signing Igor Thiago, who will join from Club Brugge on July 1. Brentford were hoping to make it to the top flight in his first season. as a Premier League player, when he scored 20 goals in the top flight to propel himself into England’s preparations for the 2026 World Cup.
In the summer of 2025, Toney would be free to negotiate with clubs without the burden of a transfer fee that needs to be paid, which would make his demands for a big salary more attractive to those involved in the negotiations, and could make him a healthy registration fee even though he would be approaching 30 by then.
