JJ Redick Never Liked AD To Lakers Coach: Report

JJ Redick has been passed over by UConn’s Dan Hurley in the race to become the next Lakers coach, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, and now it turns out Redick was never the best player in Anthony Davis’ eyes.

Instead, Davis reportedly preferred teammate James Borrego, according to NBA expert Marc Stein.

“It’s been suggested around the league that Lakers star Anthony Davis might prefer James Borrego to get the job over Redick,” Stein said in his interview. “Not only has Borrego been a two-time head coach in Orlando and Charlotte compared to Redick’s lack of coaching experience, but he and Davis met briefly when Borrego started playing with the Pelicans after Davis was drafted as number 1 in June 2012.”

Stein’s report was published before Wojnarowski broke the news about Dan Hurley.

Davis is not afraid to talk about the coaching staff of the Lakers, which was evident when he burned them in the first round of the playoffs.

LeBron clearly has a strong connection with Redick, as the two started a podcast together in recent months.

But even James’ agent, Rich Paul, thinks AD should be more powerful than LeBron in the Lakers’ coaching decision.

“In my opinion, the Lakers’ focus should be more on Anthony Davis than LeBron at this point,” Paul told B/R late last month. “I think that since he has been good for a long time, people think that he is the one who controls the team. There is no group control. And JJ is a friend. We respect JJ. I know LeBron and JJ have a podcast. I did JJ’s podcast. JJ and I talk about hoops all the time. You know hoops. But because they have a podcast, the Lakers have to make a decision now and then. “
