Match Report – BAN vs IND Warm Up, June 01, 2024

India 182 for 5 (Pant 53, Hardik 40*, Suryakumar 31) beat Bangladesh 122 for 9 (Mahmudullah 40, Arshdeep 2-12, Dube 2-13) for 60 runs

After enduring a tough IPL season in several tournaments, Hardik Pandya served as a reminder of his top-class skills in India’s T20 World Cup preparations with a 60-run win over Bangladesh in New York.

Hardik hit an unbeaten 23-ball 40 and took 1 for 10 in his first two overs before conceding 20 in the third. But it was good for India to have a big all-rounder in the game as he did, in the conditions – the pitch was two paced and the outfield slow – that helped his bowling but not his batting. Other stories came from Rishabh Pant, who retired after hitting a 32-ball 53, and Arshdeep Singh, who claimed two wickets in a spell of new-ball swing.

Neither Kohli nor Jaiswal

Virat Kohli only arrived in New York before this match, so it was expected that he would not play the warm-up. It was unexpected, however, that Yashasvi Jaiswal – another candidate to open alongside Rohit Sharma – also did not play a role. India opened, instead, with Rohit and Sanju Samson.

It would have been a first-choice wicketkeeper interview. On that day, Samson hit 1 for 6, and was successful in the second over to Shoriful Islam in-ducker. There seemed to be a chance that this ball might miss the leg stump, but the DRS was not working so Samson had to go.

Panty on fire at No.3

Pant replaced Samson, and went on to play the smoothest innings of the day. India were 33 for 1 in five overs when they started the momentum with three sixes off Shakib Al Hasan in the sixth over. He hit four fours and four sixes in total, and guided the area behind the wicket with aplomb, using a reverse-sweep and his trademark no-look scoop over short fine leg to effect.

Pant kept the wicket, rather than Samson, and at the end of the day it seemed certain that he would take the big gloves on Wednesday, when India open the tournament with a draw against Ireland.

Allrounder watch

Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik were the other big contributors in India’s total of 182 for 5, scoring 71 off 41, while Shivam Dube, who batted between them at No. 5, struggled with the conditions. Dube bowled the spinners again and again, but he connected only one real one, a huge 6 over long-on, while hitting 14 off 16.

Then, having bowled just one over in 14 matches during the IPL, he went on to bowl three here and take two wickets, even though Bangladesh were already 42 for 5 when he got out.

Ravindra Jadeja batted at No. 7, but Axar Patel, another Indian left-arm batsman, bowled ahead of him and picked up the wicket. It remains to be seen which of the two is part of India’s starting XI, or if they go with both and leave out wristspinner Kuldeep Yadav.

India play three of their four group stage matches in New York, and if the conditions remain very similar, they can get some bowling from their four allrounders – Hardik, Jadeja, Axar and Dube.

Arshdeep vs Siraj

Jasprit Bumrah is the first name at the end of the Indian team sheet, but who brings him with the new ball? On this day, Arshdeep made a serious charge for himself, bowling the new ball brilliantly and dismissing Soumya Sarkar and Litton Das in Test match fashion.

Mohammed Siraj was also excellent, making the ball misbehave with a strong length, and removing Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto with a single delivery that pinched him. On the evidence of their show here, India will have a tough task to pick one of the two, considering they go with two quicklines and Hardik as the third seamer.

The problems of Bangladesh

For Bangladesh, coming into the match after a shocking series defeat to the USA, the result reinforced major concerns going into the World Cup, especially their lack of strength for a long time. India hit ten sixes in their 20 overs, and Bangladesh one. Of the four batsmen who faced at least 10 balls in their chase of 183, only one – Mahmudullah, who top-scored with 28 balls of 40 – went more than the ball.

Mahmudullah again bowled two tidy overs to get Rohit out, and grabbed the wicket of the day to send Dube back, running right from long off and flicking the ball expertly as he came out and back into the field. All in all, it was a good day for the 38-year-old.

Bangladesh received an injury scare when left-arm spinner Shoriful left the field five balls into India’s final over when he tried to block Hardik’s straight delivery and took a hard hit on his left hand. His injury was not clear at the end of the game.

The margin of victory for India, however, may have been increased by the resources available to both teams. India’s pace did most of their early damage, claiming four wickets between them to reduce Bangladesh to 41 for 5. Bangladesh, however, bowled five overs of real pace – and one of soft pace from Soumya Sarkar. This is because they rested Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman, both of whom could have caused problems for India in this field.
