Michael Carrick has signed a new deal for Middlesbrough

Michael Carrick has signed a new three-year contract to remain Middlesbrough manager.
The former Manchester United and England midfielder has impressed in his first managerial role having been appointed in October 2022.
He led the Teessiders to the Championship play-offs in his first season in charge while they reached the semi-finals of the EFL Cup in 2023-24 before moving to Chelsea over two legs.
The 42-year-old, who hails from the north-east, told the club’s website: “I’m very happy about it.
“I’ve been calm about it. I think that stickiness, that trust and that belief within the team is very important.
“We definitely got that – that’s what still gives me the good feeling I had when I walked in the door.
“It sounds like a big step as a title, as a statement, but in reality it doesn’t change anything I do or how I deal with it, it continues what we are trying to achieve.”

Prior to his move to the Riverside, Carrick took temporary charge of the first team at United following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November 2021, winning two and drawing one of his three spells in charge.
In a professional career that included spells at West Ham and Tottenham, Carrick flourished at United, winning five Premier League titles under Alex Ferguson and the Champions League in 2008.
