MLC 2024 – Steven Smith joins the Washington Freedom in Major League Cricket

Steven Smith has been confirmed as the signing of the Major League Cricket (MLC) Washington Freedom team ahead of the second season of this competition which will start on July 4. This decision has been watched by many, as Smith signed as an ambassador of the Freedom last week. per year, and Australia’s international schedule allows a clear window for him to participate in July.

“I am very excited to be joining the Washington Freedom for the second season of the MLC,” Smith said in a video posted to the Freedom’s social media channels. “I can’t wait to meet all my new teammates and play in front of some amazing crowds in America. And I’m looking forward to working with Ricky Ponting again, and his amazing staff.”

Smith, who has an apartment in New York, has previously said it would be great to play in the USA.

However, he faces a battle for a place in Australia’s final 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup, which will be held in June, as he has failed to play much T20 cricket in recent times. Since returning to the BBL for the Sydney Sixers in the 2022-23 season, where he made 346 runs at 174.74, Smith has played two T20Is for India, two matches in last season’s BBL and several matches against – New Zealand. in February, where he went 11 and 4 in the opener.

But after the New Zealand series, he said he was relaxed about how the invitation to select the T20 World Cup, when Australia are due to name their first squad on May 1, goes down.

“I think they’ve settled in at the top – to be honest – too [Travis] head, [David] Warner and [Mitchell] Marsh in the top three,” he told AAP. “I really don’t know what it is [selectors] i want to do. I’m not too fussy anyway. If I’m there, I’m there; if I’m not, I’m not.”

Smith joins Adam Zampa (Los Angeles Knight Riders), Spencer Johnson (Knight Riders) and Tim David (MI New York) as Australia’s confirmed signings for the second season of the MLC, with more expected to join the competition from immediately after T20. The World Cup in the USA and West Indies ends on June 29.
