Pat Cummins on the secret to success

So, what exactly lies behind Australia’s dominance in ICC events? Their current captain, Pat Cummins, shed some light on this. Surprisingly, Australia won two ICC titles under Cummins’ leadership in 2023, winning both the ICC World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup.

In a special interview no Sports Tak after the lead Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 final, Cummins emphasized the importance of balancing mindset and approach. He noted that luck plays a big role in ICC tournaments and explained that Australia intends to treat the finals like any other game while realizing that their actions in these games will be remembered for a long time.

“You can’t discount the luck of winning an ICC title. We spend a lot of time balancing between reducing the pressure of finals, but at the same time kind of admitting that you’re going to spend a long time in your life looking back and making sure you played the way you wanted to play. We had a little bit of success, taking the confidence from the final to the next one,” Cummins told Sports Tak.

The challenge of winning abroad

When asked which final was more challenging to win, the ODI World Cup or the WTC, Cummins said the ODI World Cup presented many challenges for Australia, and winning the title under foreign conditions brought them great satisfaction.

โ€œThe ODI World Cup, we have to beat all the other teams. We were playing under Indian conditions, which was unusual for us. We had injuries to deal with, form to deal with, so a lot of things had to come together, and it finally came together. And you know, that’s what makes it satisfying what you know. It’s not easy,” Cummins said.
