Reds Pick Conner Capel – MLB Trade Rumors

The Reds announced a series of moves today, opting to sign an outfielder Conner Capel while also triggering the foreign player TJ Friedl and the right hand Frankie Montas in their order on the injured list. The group had chosen to use the left hand Sam Moll yesterday and opened up two more roster spots today by selecting outfielders Nick Martini again Father Thompson. Making room for Capel in the 40 man, who is right-handed Ian Gibaut transferred to IL for 60 days.

Capel, who turns 27 this month, signed a minor league deal with the Reds in the offseason. He has been in Triple-A so far this year and is doing very well. In 122 plate appearances, he walked almost as often as he struck out, with a 16.4% walk rate compared to a 17.2% strikeout rate. He hit seven home runs and has a .268/.397/.567 batting line, which translates to a 146 wRC+.

The outfielder has 145 major league plate appearances on his resume with a slash line of .280/.366/.408. He struggled in Triple-A last year, prompting the Athletics to cut him from their roster, but hit .263/.364/.422 in the minors in 2022 with a 112 wRC+.

On top of that solid offensive performance of the past few years, Capel can steal a few bases and walk around the field. He played left field and center field this year, with previous experience in right field as well. He has swiped six bags so far in 2024, with double digits in most of his minor league seasons.

The Reds entered the season with what appeared to be a surplus of position players, but that surplus quickly evaporated. Noelvi Marté was hit with an 80-game PED suspension, Matt McLain he needed shoulder surgery and Friedl broke his wrist. Recently, some players have been missing time without going to IL, including Jake Fraley, Tyler Stephenson, Christian Encarnacion-Strand again Jeimer Candelario.

That led to more playing time for players like Martini and Thompson. Martini hit two homers on Opening Day but has added just one since and is currently hitting .177/.200/.329 for the season overall. Thompson is one of the fastest players in the league, but he hasn’t hit much. For the Reds this year, he has scored in 11 of the 18 games he has played.

Friedl hit .267/.341/.456 in his career and should provide a boost to the lineup. Capel can too, but he’s also probably behind Friedl, Is Benson, Spencer Steer and Fraley on the outfield/designated hitter depth chart. But he will probably fill Thompson’s role as a bench runner, even though he has better skills in the batter’s box. Capel still has an option left and could easily be sent back to the minors later if the Reds so choose.

Montas hit the IL a few weeks ago after getting hit by a rebound in his right armpit. The x-rays were negative but the club wanted to sedate him as the pain and swelling subsided. Now he’s back after at least a stint in IL, as expected. Nick Martinez He has been absent for a few periods but appeared to be comfortable over the weekend. Montas will enter the rotation next Nick Lodolo, Andrew Abbott, Hunter Greene again Graham Ashcraft.

Gibaut, 30, has been on the disabled list all year with a strained right arm. He has tried to resuscitate several times but continues to shut down with renewed pain. A little over a week ago, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer is connected to X that the righty was closed and went to another test. Today’s transfer means he is not eligible to return until 60 days after his first IL filing, which will be in late May. That doesn’t seem likely right now as he doesn’t throw and it may take some time for him to pitch even if he is cleared to pitch early.
