T20 World Cup 2024 – ICC announces record prize money

The winners of the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup will also take home the glittering trophy and a prize money of around $2.45 million, the highest in the tournament’s history. This jumps to almost $850,000 in the last T20 World Cup, in 2022 in Australia, where the winners, England, won $1.6 million.

The tournament’s total prize money has doubled: from $5.6 million in 2022 to $11.25 million for this year’s 20-team tournament. That means an increase in prize money for all teams.

The runners-up will win at least $1.28 million (up from $800,000 in 2022), while the semifinalists will receive $787,500 (up from $400,000 in 2022) each.

The other four teams in the Super Eights will earn $382,500 each, while the ninth through 12th place teams will receive $247,500 each and the others will receive $225,000 each. Teams will also receive $31,154 for each match they win except for the semifinals and finals.

“This event is historic in many ways so it is appropriate that the prize money for the players reflects that,” ICC chief executive Geoff Allardice said in a statement. “Hundreds of millions of fans around the world will be entertained by the players in what we hope will be an Out of This World event.”

The T20 World Cup 2024, which began with the USA beating Canada in the opening match on Saturday, has been divided into four groups of five teams each.

There are 40 first-round matches before eight teams advance to the Super Eight stage, where the four semi-finals will be determined. Group A has USA, Canada, India, Ireland and Pakistan. In Group B there are Australia, England, Namibia, Oman and Scotland. In Group C there are West Indies, Afghanistan, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Uganda, while Group D has Bangladesh, Nepal, Netherlands, South Africa and Sri Lanka.

The two semi-finals will be played on June 27 in Tarouba and Providence and the final will be played in Bridgetown on June 29.
