The Barcelona star is willing to ‘take a risk’ to play at Euro 2024

Frenkie de Jong has admitted he is willing to gamble and ‘take some risks’ as he races to get in shape for the upcoming European Championships.

Barcelona midfielder De Jong has been forced to miss part of the 2023/24 campaign after sustaining an ankle injury. He played 30 games in all competitions, scoring two goals in that time.

Despite his difficult season, De Jong has been named in Ronald Koeman’s squad for the upcoming Euro 2024, and he is willing to withdraw to ensure he stays on the plane to Germany.

De Jong is currently taking part in individual training at the Dutch camp, where he spoke to reporters ahead of his recovery plans.

Talking to The Telegraph, De Jong said: “We have a way in mind, but it will depend on how the ankle will stop me whether I will be in the right shape. I am still working individually, I will have to join the team and work on the situation I am facing. I can get playing time.

“That may happen during the tournament. There are no fixed dates but there must be hope to participate in the tournaments. Otherwise there is no need to stay.

“I am willing to risk going to the European Championship with the Dutch team, but the most important thing for me is not to have a permanent ankle injury.

“At the moment it’s not like that and that’s why I haven’t had ankle surgery, yes it’s the third ankle injury this season and the same ankle but there’s no instability. it started early and the injury was still in my head.”

In a press conference where he announced his team that will play in the tournament in Germany, Koeman confirmed that De Jong’s presence in the team’s first game is ‘possible’, however he cannot say ‘how long he will stay’.

The Netherlands will face Austria, France and Poland in Group D, with their first match against Michal Probierz’s side on 16 June.
