Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has given an update on the future of Athletic Bilbao midfielder Nico Williams amid interest from Arsenal and Barcelona.
Specially speaking CaughtOffside in the latest edition of his Daily Briefing column, Romano explained that it is too early to know exactly what is happening with William’s future, although it seems that Barca value the player.
Arsenal also have the talented young Spaniard on their target list, as Charles Watts previously stated CaughtOffside in his Daily Briefing column, and it makes sense that the big clubs are interested in this exciting attacking player who looks like he has a big future in the game.
Still only 21 years old, Williams has seven goals and ten assists in all competitions so far this season, and Arsenal could do with someone like that to give them more depth in attack as they often find themselves over-reliant. Bukayo Saka, especially as Gabriel Martinelli’s form has declined this season.
Barca, on the other hand, would do well to consider an upgrade for Raphinha, but Romano insists that interested clubs are waiting to better understand the money that would be involved in trying to complete a deal for Williams.

“I don’t know about the negotiations so far, but Nico really has many rescuers. Barcelona, the top English clubs and not only… there is a lot of interest,” said Romano.
“I am still told that all the clubs are waiting to understand the money the player wants in terms of commission and salary. Barca appreciates him but it’s still the early stages.”
Discussing Arsenal’s interest recently, Watts told us: “My understanding is that Arsenal are looking for a player who can operate in wide areas and Malen has obviously done very well since moving from north London in 2017 to PSV and then Dortmund. But I would be surprised if he is the real option for Arsenal.
“What I know is that they have been interested in Pedro Neto for a long time, and Nico Williams is also heard to be high on the list of those who may be looking. I see players like these two ahead of Malen in the right way come the summer.”
