Phillies Place Trea Turner on Ten-Day Injured List

1:43 PM: Difficulty matters, as Turner tells Matt Gelb of The Athletic and other journalists that he will miss at least six weeks.
12:56 PM: The Phillies announced that Trea Turner was placed on the 10-day injured list due to left hamstring strain. Striker Is Clemens was called up from Triple-A to replace Turner on the active roster.
The placement is not a surprise, as Turner’s injury forced him to exit yesterday’s 4-3 Phillies win over the Giants. In the fourth inning, Turner was on second base there Jordan Hicks He threw the fourth ball to strike Bryce Harperand the ball bounced off the catcher Tom Murphya passed ball glove. Turner sprinted to third base and homered to score the game, but at a cost, as Edmund Sosa took over for Shortstop Turner in the top of the fifth.
After a slow start in 2023 (the first year of his 11-year, $300MM deal with Philadelphia), Turner was even better at the start of the 2024 campaign. The shortstop is hitting .343/.392/.460 with two home runs, 27 runs scored, and 10 steals in 11 attempts. A .421 BABIP and .379 wOBA far above his .330 xwOBA shows that Turner has enjoyed some luck posting his key numbers, although Turner’s excellent speed has always led to strong BABIP results.
Turner was one of the main reasons why the Phillies won 22 league games. There’s no easy way for the Phils to replace that production, and the team can only hope that Turner’s struggles are minor enough for him to return quickly and make a full recovery. Sosa will get more playing time at shortstop in Turner’s absence, with Clemens replacing Sosa as the team’s reliever. Philadelphia could also use Bryson Stott at shortstop and deploy Whit Merrifield often at second base, although Merrifield has started slowly at the plate.
