This simple anti-slice drill fixes your bad surface habit

Wondering how to fix a piece? Master teacher Andrew Rice shares a simple program that uses an alignment stick to help solve the problem.

Ask 100 beginner golfers what their biggest problem is on the golf course, and I’d bet 90 percent would say cutting the golf ball. But just because cutting is what most of us deal with doesn’t mean we have to “play the piece” every time we put it together.

How many times have you or your cutting buddies pushed as far left as possible (for a right-handed player), accepting the fact that you’re going to spin the shot back onto the fairway? Maybe more.

Let’s face it, though, this is no way to pass a round of golf. At some point, you need to find a way to fix the swing – which starts with cutting the clubface in the correct swing direction.

There are 3 types of pieces. Here’s what causes each – and how to fix them

The best way to do that? Sorry, but it won’t go to the level of driving and hitting a bunch of balls more often. Instead, it uses training aids that provide instant feedback while hitting shots.

So to help you get your swing right, GOLF 100 Top Instructor Andrew Rice shares one of his most popular drills – correcting your top swing – all using nothing but an alignment stick. See below to see how it works.

How to prepare your piece

So why did the piece happen? Although there are a few different causes, the most common problem is a loose clubface from the upper swing.

But Rice says using the above drill will cure the problem, turning your pieces into a more natural drawing.

“The most popular exercise of the entire season is the one here,” Rice said. “So if you’re struggling to get to the top and you’re losing your clubhead and you want to get out of that, do this.”

Next, Rice goes through how to practice this in the anti-slice drill.

He explains: “Put the alignment stick in the ground and point it exactly where you want to go. “I have the head of the alignment rod about the length of the grip off the ground, and I’m going to fit the golf ball under the head of that alignment rod.”

The image below shows what the drill should look like.

After setting up the drill, Rice uses a 7-iron and targets his ball. As he swings, he’s able to get feedback quickly – if he hits the fairway, he goes up and (maybe) spins the golf ball. But if he misses the fairway, his swing is correct, he presses the ball, and produces a natural draw.

“Paintings are a product of faces stuck in the road,” Rice said. “So we need this club to be strong, which is the reason why many people come to the top.

“Let’s tighten up the face and get the clubhead closer to the ball under that club,” he added. If we do that, we’ll hit nice little shots that start right and go back.

So as you learn to prepare a piece, this simple exercise is a good first step to progress. With deliberate practice, you will begin to build muscle memory to avoid many of your common bad habits.
